Tribute to John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

Hosted by Tony Award-winning lyricist, playwright, and broadcaster Murray Horwitz, this concert explores the diverse roots and global impact of the classic American Popular Song era, highlighting how timeless works by legendary composers continue to be a reflection of who we are as Americans. In this 250th birthday year, it’s worth asking: how did American popular music conquer the world? The answer starts with the works of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, Dorothy Fields, Fats Waller, The Gershwins, and a host of other brilliant songwriters. Their music and lyrics are a reflection of the spirit and vibrant mixture that is America. Featuring incredible local D.C.-area talent, including percussionist Chuck Redd, pianist William Knowles, bassist Herman Burney, and vocalists Lena Seikaly and Steve Washington.

The Thad Wilson Jazz Orchestra performs a special tribute to two of jazz's most beloved vocal legends, Billy Eckstine and Sarah Vaughan. Led by acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and arranger Thad Wilson, the orchestra brings together some of the finest musicians in the DMV for an evening celebrating the elegance, swing, and sophistication of these iconic artists. Featuring special guest vocalists Alison Crockett and Steve Washington—two of the region's most respected and in-demand jazz performers—the concert will showcase classic standards, romantic ballads, and swinging favorites associated with Eckstine and Vaughan. With lush big band arrangements, inspired improvisation, and unforgettable vocal performances, this tribute honors the enduring legacy of two voices that helped shape the sound of jazz, while offering fresh interpretations for today's audiences.

The Band’s historic farewell concert in 1976 is honored in grand style, as some of the DC area’s finest performers join together to play the iconic songs performed by The Band, and their guests, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, & Ronnie Hawkins. The Last Waltz was performed at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving night.
